Name: Umino Iruka
Canon: Naruto
Character Journal:
senseiofthesea
Gender: Male
Age: 26
Birthday: May 26th
Village Affiliation: Konohagakure
Rank: Chunin
Canon History: Wiki
Canon Abilities/Powers: Iruka is a character that is largely undefined in his skill set. He shows an aptitude for casting and detecting Genjutsu, bomb based traps, and barrier ninjutsu. His Taijutsu is a fairly decent level for his rank, and he, in the anime does a play off his name and uses echolocation in jutsu form.
Appearance: Iruka is a shinobi who embodies the shinobi fundamentals, and his appearance is little exception. His hair is a brown dark enough it almost looks black, usually worn in a high tail, his eyes are dark brown, and even his skin has just enough tan to not really be out of place no matter where he goes. It's his scar that really makes him stand out, over the bridge of his nose, and he's rarely seen without at least a small smile. His attire is a chunin uniform on most days, and he stands at an even 5'10".
Personality:
Iruka is someone who cares deeply about the people around him. It drives him to fussing with those he's closest to, and to being a bit of a busybody when he decides that someone isn't taking care of themselves properly. In many ways, he feels a strong responsibility to those under his care. Even those who used to be under his care and technically aren't any longer still matter to him enough that he checks up on them from time to time to make sure that they are doing well in their lives. Part of this is a result of his being a teacher, and wanting to be sure that what he taught them was enough, but part of this is just having been placed once too often in a position where someone could be hurt by his mistakes. He forms bonds with others easily, but the depth of the bond always depends on just how much he's actually needed. From being a child who did everything he could to try to live up to his parents' wishes, to an adult who watches over class after class of young shinobi to be, those who expect, or need, the most from him will always be those who he ends up with the strongest ties to.
While deeply caring and responsible, that doesn't mean that Iruka still doesn't have a sense of humor. Contrary to canon, where it was a lack of parents that inspired his pranking, here it was a desire to get out from under the weight of their expectations and do something to make the people around him laugh. True, not all his pranks were in the best taste, but that doesn't mean that it didn't achieve what he wanted it to, and he can still be found to have a rather off color sense of humor if someone in his presence happens to carry off a grand joke. Not that he'll let anyone know it in most instances, given he has a reputation to uphold as a very serious sensei, but he's been known to hide a grin at even base humor.
A last key point to Iruka's personality is his temper. This is best known by the way he handles his classes, being no nonsense and unafraid to shout to keep the group in line. In these cases he's quickly heeded to, and the students don't hold it against him. It's when something genuinely makes him angry that Iruka's temper is truly frightening, being quiet and brilliant, and often somewhat violent in nature. Few ever see this, and it's almost never seen on his own behalf, but woe betide the person that actually manages to draw the man's ire.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
+ Intelligent: His best attribute is how well he uses what he has.
+ Responsible: He can be counted on to ensure things get finished and people get trained.
+ Generous: He's always willing to pay for a meal for a friend, or offer a place to crash for the night.
+/- Caring: It can carry him away, and while it's a good positive, it also leads him to throw himself into danger for others.
+/- Temperamental: His temper can be very useful in the classroom, but it also leads to him being a bit reckless if it gets pricked at the wrong time.
+/- Kindhearted: It means he often sees the best in people, but it also means he doesn't like to see people hurt, which makes him more of a liability on missions.
- Over protective: He has some issues sorting out exactly when he should let go of someone to stand on their own feet.
- Ninjutsu: He's talented with basic tricks, but he's never going to be a powerhouse and any lapse in control would leave him vulnerable in combat.
- Impulsive: Iruka has the habit of going with his gut, and sometimes this instinct can go very poorly for him and the people around him.
Sunshine Abilities/Powers:
Ninjutsu
Echolocation: A jutsu he developed first as a self depreciating joke, he later refined it into a clear skill that projects chakra in a careful bouncing radius around him that lets him track his surroundings without it being obvious that he's doing anything.
The Basic Three: Henge, Kawarimi, and Bunshin. They're the basis for all shinobi training in Iruka's mind, and that means he's perfected them to the highest standard he's physically capable of, though it's rarely seen how often some of these are used because of how fluidly he uses them.
Aside from these, Iruka has perfected all of the chakra control techniques he's come across, and has a definite affinity toward anything fire related.
Fuuinjutsu
He knows entrapment seals that he uses to keep people stationary or outside of any given area, that are powerful enough that even Jinchuuriki have some issues escaping them. In line with this, once the scrolls came about, he set to learning everything he could to secure them so he could teach his students the basics.
Taijutsu
He's an expert at the basic style that the Academy uses, and he can never be faulted for his forms. Using economy of motion more than speed or strength, he's a difficult opponent for even a jounin in straight hand to hand, unfortunately, while his stamina is decent, once he gets overpowered he gets easily overwhelmed. In terms of weapon combat, his throwing skills are incredibly accurate, as he knows the perfect ways to hold and handle weapons, even if he only really ever uses kunai consistently himself.
Genjutsu
Due to his team as a genin, he mastered the art of primal genjutsu and is incredibly skilled at affecting the emotions of others without it being anything more than a matter of pure intent on his part. That is not to say he's not good at the other branches of genjutsu however, as he learned to deftly manipulate senses so that it was as subtle as he could learn to make it, letting him affect those around him in careful little manipulations instead of grand sweeping illusions. His use of them also means that he's extremely good at detecting them, and rarely ever is caught off guard enough to be stuck in one.
Trap Making
Iruka's other place to really shine is traps. He's excellent at them, knowing all the best ways to rig up an area so that trap after trap can be set off on a target with a single wrong move, and it means that he's perfected the art of placing explosive tags and weapons to inflict the most possible damage in the best way possible. Usually his traps tend to be non-lethal however, as he uses them to capture wayward students, or to use them in training exercises to teach his pre-genin.
Sunshine History:
Iruka's story starts with a boy who was very much a believer that his parents were the most awesome people in the world and no one else could compare. They were strong, smart, capable, and loved him as much as he loved them. In another world, he lost them, but in this one that admiration grew into an understanding that he was someday going to either live up to their standards or he would let them down. It was stress that he didn't need, and in the last year of his schooling he stepped up into the role of class joker. He stuck to his studies, yes, but he also started to lay traps and play pranks in an effort to use laughter to settle the first twinges of realizing that he had different goals for himself than his parents, both jounin, had for him.
It was enough to draw Ibiki's eyes to him at least, as the fresh jounin didn't want a team so much as an apprentice and took him on when he graduated at eleven. That lasted for a year and both he, who managed to spectacularly fail his first go at a chunin exam, and his future, and a year older, teammate from that particular disaster both were netted into a team with the newly graduated Itachi. It was probably the best thing he could have had happen to him, because until then the boy had been at loose ends, his future unclear, and just aware that he really didn't want to be a jounin. He didn't want to be a killer, and he knew perfectly well that the higher in rank you went, the more likely it was for your hands to be painted crimson.
His time as a genin with that group really set the tone for the rest of his life, and presented him with the first person he had ever needed to be responsible for. It also marked the first loss of a comrade less than a year into being on a team, which made him truly buckle down and start taking being a shinobi seriously. It drew the Hokage's gaze to him when he was devastated over the loss, and lit the fire in him that eventually turned into his desire to teach. He didn't ever want to see another genin be so unprepared in the field that they died. Never again did he want that to be something that happened when he had the ability to stop it. Thus, he set out to fix it, starting with his team, not because his remaining teammate was unprepared, no. It wasn't that at all. He just refused to move up the ranks before his teammate did so himself, and in the process was better prepared to be without him, thus delaying his progression to chunin for a few years. He was sixteen when he finally made the rank, and immediately turned his attention to getting into the Academy to teach without any further delays. He has remained in that position ever since, though he has the habit of taking time in the Hokage office when no classes are running.
It wasn't the life his parents hoped for on his behalf, and they still sometimes prod him to do more with himself, but he's happy teaching, and in the time he's been at the Academy the amount of accidents that leave severe injuries has dropped dramatically. It's enough for him, and he's happy with how his life has ended up. He has no desire to change it, even if sometimes he wished he had more time to properly keep up with his loved ones.
Prose sample:
The thing about being an Academy teacher, he'd learned, was that you really couldn't take your eyes off the students for even a second. It was why he'd perfected that joke jutsu he'd created, and why he used it so religiously when he had to turn around for even a moment. It had been simpler, keeping track of the pack, when he'd been an assistant teacher instead of running the class, because at least then there were two sets of eyes on the crowd. He didn't mind having charge of the group now though, it meant he didn't step on any toes anymore when he corralled the students, and it also meant that he could steer the curriculum how he wanted without having to bite his tongue until he could talk to the head teacher in private like he used to so often.
Unfortunately, it also meant that anyone who fell behind was his responsibility, as was anyone who got hurt, and anyone who was having trouble at home. It was okay though, it just made sure that his skills kept up to make sure those things didn't happen. He could intervene before injury, he could spot trouble before a student got too rowdy, and if someone was having issues at home... there wasn't as much he could do about that, but he could make sure that the student knew that he had an ear to offer.
It didn't stop days like today though, and he was, for the moment, turning his eyes on a particular student who was usually so quiet and studious, and had somehow ended up on the floor in a hair pulling match with another girl. "Mei-san, Yuki-san."
He wasn't yelling, yet, but just saying their names was enough to freeze the girls in place, drawing a pair of horrified eyes to him. "You need to return to your seats girls, we're in the middle of a lesson."
Clearly his tone was enough warning that yelling was on the horizon if they didn't comply, because they disengaged and scurried back to their seats swiftly. He watched them for a moment to make sure that nothing else would happen, and when no one else put up a fuss, he turned back to the board to resume writing.
Being in charge had some problems and difficulties, sure, but that didn't mean it didn't have perks too. Instant compliance like that? Definitely a perk.
He wouldn't have it any other way.

Uchiha-san,
Your concerns about the importance of teaching even the boys about flower arranging has, of course, been taken into account, and was not a frivolous use of your son's time as your letter implied. Konoha teaches their aspiring kunoichi to use art as a weapon, and because of this I feel it's only prudent that the boys know what they're fighting against. It is much the same as making sure that those same young kunoichi are not lacking in any sort of weapon training themselves which might leave them at a disadvantage. Taking this in mind, I hope that your concerns have been put to rest, and in the future please know that I am always willing to answer questions of this nature from any parents. If this has not eased your mind, I am, of course, available to have a meeting with you personally to better explain the situation.
Best Regards,
