Kankuro
Name: Kankuro
Canon: Naruto
Character Journal: highly_strung
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Birthday: May 15
Canon History: Kankuro
Village Affiliation:
Sunagakure.
Rank: Jounin.
Appearance:
Kankuro is 5'8" and is pretty much the spitting image of his father when he isn't wearing paint or a head-dress, aside from the fact that Kankuro's hair colour is much darker. It's not a lie to say that Kankuro looks interesting, and is definitely not bad looking. He has quite a large nose, but inherited his father's intense, piercing eyes and regular stern frown...
Typically, Kankuro can be seen sporting his current choice of purple face-paint design in varying levels of intricacy. He wears a simple black tunic and trousers, tied with a red sash at his waist, and a black head-dress with the Suna plate attached to the front. He carries his three puppets around in summoning scrolls at his back.
Sunshine History:
Kankuro's history remains much the same as canon up until his involvement in thechuunin exams. Kankuro's father never made the deal with Orochimaru to assemble the attack on Konoha during the exams when his children were entered, and continues to live on to this day. Kankuro didn't forfeit his match with Shino Aburame, instead fighting to a draw where neither could be called the winner as neither was able to perform any longer, but neither would back down. Kankuro took the exams again at his next opportunity and passed, going on to gain a jounin promotion.
During the time between his first fail and his second successful attempt, Kankuro would have sought training from many sources... One in particular was Lady Chiyo. Where in canon Chiyo refused to train Kankuro as she no longer cared about the future of Suna, in this AU Kankuro would have been much more invested in keeping Suna supported and independent, and would have therefore seen a little more of her tutoring and kept her support for Suna at least a little more alive. Chiyo would have had a hand in furthering Kankuro's achievements as a puppet master (perhaps the reason he is now the owner of Sasori's old trio of puppets?) but would have influenced his opinion on Konoha greatly. Chiyo is the reason Kankuro buckles down and turns his attentions a little more toward rational strategising rather than boasting and thoughtless retaliations.
Between his promotion from chuunin to jounin, like his sister Kankuro would have been graced with the opportunity to shadow his father to learn skills in diplomacy and leadership in order to keep the peace with other villages and effectively perform his role as a leader, and as Kazekage. Other than this opportunity, Kankuro would have continued to receive fine-tuned training from his mentor, Baki, and continued support from Chiyo.
After his jounin promotion, Kankuro spends most of his time in Suna, reluctant to travel away from the village as he prefers to stay close in order to offer his support and protection should the village require it. He offers teaching at the academy and trains new puppeteer recruits, but is often encouraged to take selected missions befitting his title and his rank – usually capture or combat missions.
In recent months, Rasa has been alerted to Kankuro's opinion regarding Konoha and any other village than his own, and has therefore made arrangements to integrate Kankuro with the other hidden villages in order to quell some of the rumours and keep appearances up. Kankuro has been assigned to various diplomatic matters between villages, sometimes accompanying either of his siblings, sometimes on his own. He dislikes the travelling. He dislikes it a lot.
Personality:
Kankuro in Sunshine exists much the same as he does during the chuunin exams in canon. I see Naruto's defeat of Gaara and the friendship they made as a result of that acting as a peace lily for all three sandsibs given Gaara's learning curve and the strength of the newly formed bonds between them that are visible after the time skip... Because this doesn't happen in Sunshine, Kankuro gains no respect for shinobi of the leaf, and pretty much secludes himself to his boasts of Suna's supremacy. He has a very similar mindset to Lady Chiyo, and to his father, in that he remains to be incredibly loyal to Suna, and very much under the impression that anyone younger than him, less talented than him, or from a different village, isn't worth his time.
He has a particular dislike for Konoha given the age-old feud between the two villages that he's heard of in so many stories, and is a victim of the influences his training from Chiyo has had on him.
Kankuro follows very much in his father's footsteps in this AU, aspiring even so far as to become Kazekage after him. He takes on many of Rasa's utilitarian mannerisms, and vows to do whatever it takes to ensure Suna has power and security, even if that means taking risks that might be morally questionable. Kankuro has a lot of Suna's independence in his character, the reputation the village has for being ruthless and determined is really instilled in him.
Kankuro has matured into a level-headed but determined ox of a young adult. He's an excellent leader – firm, but fair – and has a lot of promise both in terms of his ability and his continued promotion on the way to possibly being next in line for the position of Kazekage. He is well-liked and popular amongst his peers, most of which tend to be Suna-nin.
The biggest difference in Kankuro's personality is his relationship with his siblings. Kankuro has spent his entire life so far being terrified of his younger brother, and the situation has given him a complex over Gaara and over anyone younger than him. He will openly bash any child that dares talk back to him, and doesn't spare a thought for using his fists as punishment. His fear of Gaara, particularly considering Gaara is his junior by two years, is a big burn on his pride that has festered into a general distrust of the boy, and Kankuro finds any and all opportunities to just ignore the fact that Gaara exists. He was so wound up in the old ways of Suna, and felt like he was made to be weak for a large portion of his youth thanks to the fear he had – and kind of still has – for Gaara.
Kankuro would aim to steep above Gaara in terms of position, therefore, to feel as though he's making up for those weak years, which lends beautifully to Kankuro's new-found determination and level-headedness when he loses in his first attempt at the chuunin exams.
Kankuro is convinced that any care Gaara shows for him is a selfish thing, because Kankuto's care is so selfish by force of his own hand. Kankuro can be quite selfish because as far as he's concerned, caring about anyone is dangerous, given his exposure to Gaara. At times Kankuro was very close to denouncing him as a brother, and there were times when Kankuro vehemently blamed Gaara for the death of their mother... There's a lot of pent up angsting locked up in Kankuro's head, but as he gets older the angst becomes tiring, and instead of hatred Kankuro just feels a kind of stubborn removal from all things Gaara.
Kankuro is the type of guy who needs exposure to gain an opinion, not heresy and stories. He likes to find his own research, and is bad with grapevines... It's because of this trait that Rasa feels a stint in Konoha might teach Kankuro that to fully support and be loyal to Suna, Kankuro must learn to appreciate all villages instead of solely his own.
When it comes to Temari, however, Kankuro is much closer to her than he is to his younger brother. It might be due to their closer age, or just their joined defence against a murderous little brother... but even when Temari gets closer to Gaara, Kankuro doesn't follow in her footsteps. But, most importantly, he doesn't shut her out, either... This proves that deep down Kankuro really does care about his family, he's just incredibly stubborn.
Canon Abilities/Powers / Sunshine Abilities:
Ninjutsu
Puppet Mastery
Kankuro is a highly skilled puppeteer both in terms of creation and application. He has been tutored and inspired by the greats of his village and has been known to modify and improve his puppets to overcome any weaknesses he might find in them, whether it be adding poison, improved joints and fixtures, or additional body parts/compartments – he loves to experiment. Kankuro is also capable of attaching his chakra strings to those of other puppeteers.
Currently, Kankuro can wield multiple puppets at the same time, but he has three loyal favourites; Karasu, Kuroari and Sanshouo. All three were originally created by Sasori of the red sand, but were passed to Kankuro when Sasori turned to favour human puppet creation.
KARASU: "Crow", a humanoid puppet with three eyes and four arms. He has spiky dark brown hair, jagged teeth and makes an eerie clicking sound whenever his joints move. Due to his humanoid shape, Kankuro is able to switch places with Karasu using the Body Replacement Technique to evade attacks and imprisonment. He gets his name from the draped robe across his front that sometimes looks like a pair of wings, and from the way Kankuro controls him from long-distances and great heights for aerial attacks, giving the impression of flight.
Karasu was Kankuro's first offensive puppet, and therefore Kankuro has spent many years tweaking his mechanisms, and Karasu is now riddled with an impressive attack arsenal featuring:
• Poision-tipped senbon, the largest of which is hidden in his mouth.
• Smoke bomb launchers in his arms.
• Blades in his wrists and torso, and in the joints of his arms, legs and head.
• Detachable limbs for multiple attacks.
• Surveillance and recording devices in his eyes.
KUROARI: "Black Ant", is very similar to Karasu in that he has three eyes, dark hair and wears a dark robe; but he has six arms and a long, bucket-shaped head with two sharp red horns attached.
Kuroari does not contain as many hidden weapons as Karasu due to his primary function being that of capturing targets, so typically he and Karasu work in tandem. However, Kuroari's arsenal is still reasonably impressive, as he has:
• Hidden serrated blades in each arm, and scythes in his torso.
• A barrel shaped stomach to capture and store enemies.
• Detachable limbs for multiple attacks.
• Senbon launchers in his arms.
SANSHOUO: "Salamander", resembles its namesake the most out of Kankuro's three puppets. This puppet is primarily used for defence. He has a frill that swings upward to defend against attacks from the front, and his tail is able to encircle his body to meet the frill, guarded by an iron cloak giving cover from all sides of his hollowed body where there is room enough for three people to take cover.
It does, however, have one weak point. The joint to the side of the frill is weak and if struck will disable the shield.
As Sanshouo is mainly a defence puppet, it doesn't have many modes of attack, but it is capable of spitting fire or releasing a poisonous gas cloud.
Taijutsu/Physical
Kankuro has reasonable skills in taijutsu, enough to keep up with other puppet users, but it is the weakest of all his skills. He is however quite strong, as he can carry his puppets on his back without getting lethargic.
Other Skills
Kankuro is an incredibly capable authority figure and leader, and has often been appointed as lead command of various fleets and divisions. He has great prowess when it comes to tactical decisions, and can synchronise teams quickly given little or no background knowledge. He is also capable of using wind, lightning, earth and water release.
Kankuro has also built up a reasonable resistance to most common poisons due to recurring exposure.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
Loyal to his village.
Protective
Deep down, is very caring
Confident
Intelligent
Good, fair leader
Respectful
Long range fighter, rarely struck down
- STILL WEAK TO POISON DESPITE HIS INTOLERANCE TO COMMON ONES
- Also weak to physical attacks
- A little blinded by his own bias
- Incredibly stubborn
- Doesn't enjoy talking about his feelings, has a tendency to bottle them up, or seek assistance from elders.
- Loyalty can sometimes be seen as arrogance.
- Weakness in taijutsu; reliant on his puppetry.

Do you realise what you've done? I know it was you, I know you told him I don't like the snow. Do you realise what a three day walk in snow means for me?
You're going down for this one. This punishment is way beyond anything I deserve for what happened, and if this is you foisting one of your missions off onto me, then you've sank lower than I thought you ever could.
Just you wait till I can feel the chakra in my fingers again, you're gonna get it.
