Name: Shino Aburame
Canon: Naruto Anime/Manga
Character Journal: [personal profile] kikaichuu
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Birthday: 23rd January
Village Affiliation: Konohagakure
Rank: Chuunin
Canon History: Wiki

Canon Abilities/Powers:
Kekkai Genkai: Aburame Clan kikaichu contract

As a member of the Aburame clan, Shino was infused at birth with a special breed of insects, called kikaichu, that use his body as a nest and feed on his chakra, living in a form of symbiosis. In return, they attack and do other tasks as he commands forming his main fighting style: in battle, he boxes in opponents with his bugs and then consumes their chakra once they cannot escape.

Ninjutsu:

Shino makes use of his clans' secret techniques while in battle. The first of these techniques is his Insect Clone Technique, which uses the bugs to create a copy of himself, that is able to reform once struck. Offensively, he's capable of encasing his enemies in a cage of insects with the Secret Technique: Insect Sphere, preventing them from moving and depriving them of their chakra. Shino can also use the bugs to spy and gather information. A female bug can be left on a target, which then can be tracked by its scent by the male bug, or scout bugs can be sent out and return to tell the host information about the area. Shino can communicate with the bugs, and the bugs specialise in stealth because they make no noise or motion during combat, making Shino highly adept in espionage.

He can also use his clan's Insect Jamming Technique which creates false chakra patterns with which they can confuse sensor-type opponents.

Other abilities include being able to summon a protective dome of insects to shield himself and his allies from incoming attacks, and the ability to drastically increase the growth rate of his insects, as well as summoning others from the proximity in order to gain information. Another area of note is that his bugs are always undergoing evolutionary adaptation through mutation and natural selection. While the kikaichu only have a lifespan of a few hours, their life-cycle ensures that there will always be females with eggs. Any variations that prove useful to the individual bug (and consequently the bug-user) in combat will be passed on to the next generation, which can then be used cultivated for their success against dangerous opponents in combat. Also, having bred insects with the rinkaichu of Torune, Shino has cultivated insects that can produce antibodies against various potent toxins.

Genjutsu:

Shino has very little natural proficiency in genjutsu and so relies more heavily on his Ninjutsu and clan abilities. With Kurenai as a sensei though, his ability to notice and defend against such attacks is greatly increased and gives him a further edge in. combat.

Taijutsu:

Shino is proficient in Taijutsu and can defend himself when needed, but it in no way plays to his strengths; something that has been made clear on several encounters and an aspect of his defense that Shino is determined to improve.

Style wise, he prefers defensive exchanges and fast takedowns, doing his best to disengage and maintain distance as quickly as. possible.

Appearance:
Currently Shino stands at a little over 5’7 but there’s plenty of room for a growth spurt to bring him in line with his taller father and cousin. His skin is uniformly pale, aided by his tendency to wear several layers at once and more often than not, he can be seen wearing a dark, high collared, sleeveless tunic and pants under a mid length hooded jacket (hood up). He wears a matching dark forehead protector and dark glasses, effectively obscuring his expression or any obvious features. His hair is black and swept back, falling into notoriously unruly spikes and generally kept short for practical reasons. Ankle wraps, kunai holster and dark standard issue sandals complete his regular attire and he is rarely seen in any state of undress.

Physically speaking, Shino is slim but strong; fine boned in his hands and face and sans layers, wavers closer to ‘pretty’ than ‘handsome’. Unseen to all though, his most striking features are his eyes; light hazel verging on gold in colour, they are an unexpected splash of interest in an otherwise monochrome palette.

Personality:
At first glance, Shino comes across as stoic and rather intimidating; the natural mystery caused by his attire breeding distrust, especially around other shinobi. At his core though, Shino is proud, loyal and furtively dedicated to his village and those he holds close. He has a burning need to improve, challenging himself and those around him to move forward and evolve as steadily as the kikaichu that call his body home.

Though he’ll hardly ever show it, irritation and frustration are his cardinal vices; reaching for anger more often than his Sensei or clan would prefer to fuel his purpose and reeling that in is still a work in progress. The majority of the time, he is unflappable but if someone discovers exactly the right buttons to push with the right pressure, Shino will crack just like anyone else, regardless of his life times worth of training in not doing exactly that.

Around his friends, little is different, unless you’re looking closely. Physical barriers are lax, small smiles, frowns and sometimes quiet laughter are more common and for those particularly close there a words; a barrage of quiet, inflectionless chatter and expansive explanation that has taken more than one person completely by surprise. Affection is shown with memory, placing emphasis on a comrades favourite place to eat or sparr or walk, choosing those over his own preferences and acquiescing by degrees, relative to how fond Shino is of someone.

This fondness though, can lead to difficulties. For someone that has spent their lifetime controlling and suppressing their emotions, Shino is alarmingly sensitive; something that he shows no interest in changing and shows just how human members of his clan actually are, conflicting with a good majority of first impressions.

Otherwise, Shino is well adjusted and enjoys his duty and the world around him in equal measure; even when some aspects completely bemuse him in their exaggeration and nuance.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
+ Alcohol tolerance. The kikaichu process ‘harmful’ chemicals as toxins and so Shino can usually metabolize booze faster than he can drink it. There is however a maximum saturation point, so this ability is a double edge blade; he’ll win you a drinking contest, but may eventually need carrying home when he just falls over from the sudden rush of drunk.

+ Critical thinking. Shino always has a plan and prides himself on hedging his bets and pulling out a trump card at the last second. He enjoys having the tactical advantage in any battle and so plays to his/his teams strengths and plays on the enemies weaknesses, reacting quickly as the situation changes.

+ Poker face. The Aburame are famed for their control and Shino is no exception. Few things ruffle his feathers and so it’s incredibly difficult to goad him into a confrontation that isn’t on his terms. Only those who know him well or have enhanced sensory abilities will succeed in getting a read from him, but good luck doing so in battle or when he particularly doesn’t want you to.

+ Observational master. A good majority of Shino’s existence is spent in quiet contemplation, studying the natural world around him and that includes the people in it. His grasp of tells and ticks is unprecedented; assessing peoples moods in a glance and adding them all to his internal lexicon for that particular person. The Aburame survive in a constant state of communication that revolves around what isn’t said, so it stands to reason that few things ever escape Shino’s notice, even outside his clan.

+ Chakra density. Playing innkeeper to a hive of hungry kikaichu has done wonders for Shino’s chakra reserves. The constant drain forces him to play smart with what he has at his disposal but what he has to draw from in the first place isn't small in the slightest. If you’re going for a war of attrition, you better be ready for a siege instead of a skirmish.

+/- Loyal to a fault. Shino is both loyal and protective of those he considers friends, going out of his way to learn about them and act accordingly in small gestures of comfort and support but this opens him up to many hurts; if those he’s attached to are careless in their manner, Shino is easily hurt and will hold titanic level grudges. These feelings usually manifest in a spiteful streak a mile wide and he will rarely let someone forget their indiscretion until amends have been made.

+/- Confidence. Shino knows his strengths and limitations and is a highly competent, self sufficient shinobi. Unfortunately, this trait leads him to take on more than he can chew, especially when teammates are involved and shows in an almost martyr level complex when he’s in command. Being a team player was only half the focus of his Sensei’s training and Shino has taken Shirakumo’s chain of command view to heart; putting himself at often dangerous fulcrum points in missions, simply to spare anyone else the difficulty.

- Hypersensitive. There’s a reason for all those layers and outside of combat, Shino suffers from an aversion to most physical touch, avoiding it from a majority of people that aren't within his close social and familial circle. The kikaichu’s natural defense against foreign chakra signatures is primarily at fault for this, making Shino wary to begin with; a lifetime spent not wanting to have an adverse reaction carries on into an Aburame’s adult life, so strangers need not apply.

- Blunt as a hammer. Shino is polite to his elders and betters but if you ask a question, you better be well prepared for the answer because he’s not about to mince his words. He sees no reason to use common vernacular, so expect a textbook definition. This tendency often makes conversation awkward for everyone who isn't Shino, especially when he picks up on that awkwardness and points it out. People often don’t take kindly to either trait and feuds can spring up where no offence was intended in the first place.

- Misunderstood. Many people view Shino and those of his clan as emotionless automatons but it is a view that couldn’t be farther from the truth. The Aburame’s poise comes from a constant control of emotion, not a lack of it and they are well versed in every high and low, but simply limit themselves from reaching either. The kikaichu feast on chakra and that energy fluctuates with emotions; it would be an extremely foolish Aburame that allows this to go on for long, but the downside of their control comes in peoples perception. Shino isn’t cold or unapproachable, he just has to keep his deeper feelings under wraps.

- Ew, bugs. The Aburame clans ability is..unpleasant and it’s a view held by nigh on everyone they encounter. This is known to them of course and they are careful not to propagate that feeling on purpose, Shino especially, but the fact remains that they share their bodies with a contract hive of chakra beetles and anyone that expects prolonged contact with him will have to be prepared for this.

- Light sensitive. Those dark glasses aren't just for show. Generations spent in the dappled conditions of the Konoha forests have bred a tendency for exceptional low light vision in Aburame clan members; the downside being that, in the brightness of unfiltered sunlight they struggle to process the input and err on the side of caution in all instances. Shino is never publicly seen without his glasses and the inherent weakness in the light hazel/gold irises hidden beneath is a closely guarded clan secret.

Sunshine Abilities/Powers:
Shino’s abilities remain largely unchanged from canon, except for two instances.

The first being that, without the guidance of an extremely proficient genjutsu user, he is weaker to the affects of people wielding the ability and comes to the conclusion of trusting the kikaichu more in those instances, much later.

On the reverse of that, his experimentation with kikaichu breeding and refinement, happens much earlier and it is something that he continues to refine past the point of noted canon.

Sunshine History:
Shino’s early life remains unchanged from canon up until the time he graduates from the academy at age 12. He spends the majority of it within the clan holdings, cared for by his father and less often mentioned mother, growing up as all young Aburame do; gently but firmly trained and cared for until they are strong and capable enough to keep their kikaichu under control and attend the academy. His childhood is only once marred; by the death of a clan member, but the sadness awards him a brother in his cousin Torune and they age with as strong a bond as any blood siblings could.

Hinata Hyuuga and Sasuke Uchiha feature greatly in his early life, pulled together by their clans as unlikely but agreeable playmates; these are memories that he cherishes and those bonds continue into their adult lives.

Once promoted to Genin, Shino is set on a team with Kiba Inuzuka and Sakura Haruno; diverging from canon and pulling them together along with their sensei Shirakumo. Training is hard and sometimes solitary. Their sensei pressing his efforts into Sakura’s development and leaving more specialized training to Shino and his clan; leading to an odd disconnect in his thinking and compounding his already large tendency to rely solely on himself when in danger.

The first spark amongst them comes about when the team is held back from the first round of Chuunin promotion for their year, clashing with Shino’s drive for progress and folding his confidence and ego in all the wrong directions. Regardless, he trains diligently, up until the moment that his own clan expresses it’s misgivings at the delay and enters Shino in the Suna exams the year he turns 15. He is accompanied by his cousin Torune and another of their clan, making it through to the final round to face Kankuro of Suna; only to be defeated by the puppet masters judicious use of poisons. It is a close call though and that fact alone drives Shino to push harder than ever to refine his abilities and his tolerance.

While Shino is recovering from his bout, Torune’s face off is disastrous; ending in a loss of control of his kikaichu and without Shino’s presence to calm the outbreak, their team is disqualified.

As originally planned though, Shino joins his team in the Kumo exams a half year later and they pass with little difficulty, lending a credence to Shirakumo’s shrewdness that Shino grudgingly accepts; preparedness has it’s own rewards and it is a lesson he takes to heart.

The next year is spent in training; refining his abilities and strengthening the weaknesses in his defence: namely the effects of poisons and his weakness in Taijutsu. Sparring is a regular occurrence between missions, usually with Kiba and acts as a needed distraction from the monotony of their Sensei’s favourite task - Patrol duty.

Torune is also key in Shino’s development during the year; working with him to breed their kikaichu together in an attempt to give them a resistance to more commonly found toxins and poisons and eliminate their current weakness.

These experiments slowly have the desired effect and eventually culminate in Shino developing an immunity to the kikaichu and poison that have made even the most casual touch from Torune, deadly. It’s a happy accident and one they are both proud of; however Shino’s resistance to the more developed toxins of Suna, remains to be seen.

Looking to the future, Shino is training for his Jounin promotion and has been seriously eyeing the rigors of ANBU; his drive for progress, pressing him to chase avenues that diverge from the current monotony he still feels under Shirakumo’s leadership.

Prose sample:
If Shino had been asked the day before where he would be tonight, ‘participating in a drinking competition’ would not have featured highly in his answer, but here he was.

The sake slipped down with alarming ease and so very many small cups in, he was only just beginning to feel the effects. His opponent on the other hand, looked like he would quite easily fall over in a light breeze; wavering dizzily on his stool and eyeing Shino with equal parts fear and wonder as the teen tilted his head in a questioning, but obviously quite sober look.

Sasuke was well into the throes of his own drunkenness; the Uchiha’s emotional roulette turning up trumps for once in an excitable and distressingly tactile mood, which would explain why Shino was essentially wearing him as a cape. His comrade was draped across Shino’s shoulders like a particularly animate scarf; supplying a supportive litany of trash talk and encouragement and freeing up Shino in his attempt to win back all the ryo that Sasuke himself had lost disastrously not an hour before.

The warning signs started in his hands; the tingle enough to alert him to the increased sluggishness of his hive. The kikaichu had been working diligently, scrubbing the ‘toxin’ from his system as quickly as they could, but the sheer amount that Shino had ingested so far was proving too much for even their faultless work ethic. The usual ebb and flow of their movements along the pathways of his body, became discordant by degrees and their confused churring gained in momentum; clearly alarmed by their innkeepers apparent want to poison himself.

A rush of chakra calmed them, but sent Shino’s head spinning with nausea at the use of energy and not for the first time, he wished for an end to this venture.

Not moments after processing that exact thought, his opponent took up what looked to be his final shot; downing it in a quick flight of wrist and neck and promptly toppled over backwards to land heavily on the bar floor, groaning and very much down for the count.

Sasuke cheered loudly in his ear and set to catching up their winnings in sweeps of his palms, depositing the mess of coins into the cradle of his shirt and making a stumbling beeline for the door almost immediately after.

Standing was an interesting exercise after that; interesting in that it felt almost impossible to order his limbs into agreement with the idea and Shino vowed silently there and then, that this would be the very last time...knowing fully well that it wouldnt.

Bracket Sample:
[His feet slide, dust swirling in his wake. Shino is aware of the change in air pressure, the heat at his back, but it’s the sting of claws against his knuckles and the challenging in slit pupils that has his attention.]

Guess again, Inuzuka.

[The air hums, his form dissolves and Kiba is left holding nothing but an angry swarm of Kikaichu. Check mate.]

Missive Sample:
[The script is deeply slanted and small, barely held together at the vowels and looping at the cross bars. It displays Shino’s tendency to think faster than he can commit his thoughts to paper and wavers between legible and illegible on a tightrope of usually orderly execution.]

Hinata-chan,

Regrettably, the exams ended in our disqualification and hospitalization. It is not serious, but I will be delayed in Suna for the week remaining. Details to follow on my return, if you are available?

Torune sends his regards.

As ever yours,

Shino
