Sunshineverse History: Clan History: No one’s quite sure where the Fukaimori came from, but they’ve been in Kusagakura for several generations. The clan has little history of its origins preserved, and most of the accounts are obviously legends. At the most basic level, the Fukaimori are a clan that specializes in genjutsu and taijutsu and are, sometimes, bonded to large cats in the style of mountain lions, pumas, and the like.

Due to the large size of their cats, the clan lives a little outside of Kusagakura, acting as an early warning system/deterrent. Some clan members live in the village itself, but usually refer to the small outside base as “home.” The clan is small, at most it has fourty members and only half of those are active ninja. The clan, being small, has married out for the last several generations, which has contributed to the shrinkage.

The clan is most well-known for their cats. What may seem like an eerie connection to the animals is actually a kind of long term genjutsu the clan has perfected. The cat and ninja undergo a ritual to establish the link, which runs on chakra. While through selective generations of breeding and exposure to humans, the cats are very intelligent and often understand simple words, it’s rare that cat and ninja can carry on conversations of just words. Usually they communicate with a mix of emotions, shared images, and words.

The link is powered by chakra, meaning if either or both partners are low on chakra, the link will break or become weak. It can be disrupted by anything that would disrupt chakra use normally, or be disrupted by some genjutsu. It can also be seen when active by Sharingan users, and sensed by chakra sensers.

Koji’s history: Koji was born to a woman in her early twenties who really didn’t want a kid, and Koji was sent to live with his father before his first birthday. Koji was born to the Fukaimori clan. His father lived slightly more isolated than the rest of the clan, as he kept track of the non-bonded cats, cat bloodlines, and helped take care of kittens and prepare them for bonding. Koji, as a result, grew up surrounded more by cats than people. His father’s cat, Bakemono, spent just as much time raising Koji as his father, did. Koji practiced fighting with a cat at his side with Bakemono until he could receive his own cat to bond with.

Koji lived a fairly normal life, training with cousins, taking care of cats, and eventually making the boring trek to the village to attend the Academy under the care of said cousins until he could be trusted to go on his own. Koji was an average student, excelling in taijutsu but generally avoided by classmates for his temper and tendency to bite whenever he was in fights. His small size got him picked on, and Koji utterly detested being teased.

Koji made gennin at the standard twelve, and at that time he was deemed mature enough to pick a cat to bond with. Several of the clan elder’s thought that Koji’s small size should be paired with an equally small cat, so match their strengths. No doubt they envisioned a team that could get into small places undetected and wait for their target. Unfortunately for them all, Koji had already made a good impression on one very awkward and clumsy kitten, and she too had won his heart. Koji was marked with his clan’s cheek tattoos at this time.

The oversized kitten was jokingly named Chiisai, and Koji carried her to his gennin meetings in a backpack/basket until she was old enough to keep up with him. It didn’t take long. Chiisai grew quickly, a brawny cat for a queen. A year later they were formally bonded through the clan’s genjustu. Early on Koji and Chiisai showed a unique understanding of each other, which didn’t exactly surprise anyone as Koji had always gotten along better with the cats than with any person. They passed the Chunnin exams at fourteen.

Koji’s life continued on the mundane track of missions, failing to get along with all but a select few of his teammates, and was slowly nudged along the track most of his clan took. He specialized in reconnaissance and assassinations. Around the time he turned sixteen, Koji’s father began asking Koji to deliver paintings for him when Koji went away from the village. Koji thought nothing of it. His father did wonderful ink paintings and didn’t get out much anymore, nor had he really run a mission for years now. It made sense for him to send the paintings with his son to be sold in a small art shop.

In actuality, Ryo was using Koji to deliver paintings with hidden messages on important village secrets to a ring of missing-nin. Ryo took payment in money and hid it around his remote housing.

A few months after that, Ryo was confronted by a few clan members and a few village leaders. They had confirmation that Koji was smuggling important information and maps of key locations out to a ring of missing-nin. They’d caught one of the members of the ring and gotten the information out of him. His description of Koji had been entirely accurate. Koji was away, making a delivery for Ryo. Ryo claimed to have nothing to do with it, feigning shock. He fully intended to, after everyone left, to escape and find Koji so they could leave Kusa together. However, some suspicion was cast on Ryo, and he was politely forced to agree to hunt down his son or be arrested for selling village secrets.

Koji and Chiisai were coming back home when they met the first scouting party sent to find them. The pair would have been taken in quietly if not for a hot-headed attempt to bring them in by force. Alarmed, Koji and Chiisai broke and ran. They had no idea what was going on, but thought if they could get to their clan stronghold, they’d be okay.

That thought in mind, Koji was relieved to run into the squad that included his father. Surely, whatever had happened, things would be cleared up now.

Ryo, now that his chances of a clean get-away were ruined, had had second thoughts about his original plan to escape. If Koji were captured, it wouldn’t be hard for people to find out it wasn’t Koji who had been dealing information. Instead of trying to take his son in alive, he attacked. Now utterly terrified, Koji and Chiisai ran again, this time away from home. Ryo, knowing Koji, was able to catch up to them first. Bakemono took Koji down. Chiisai retaliated by attacking Ryo.

Fortunately for Koji and Chiisai, their opponents were older. Koji managed to cut Bakemono’s throat, but he received a deep bite wound on his left arm and scratches on his arms and legs. Chiisai escaped with one a few scratches and a stab wound or two. The two ran, knowing whatever else had happened, they were now comrade killers. After being attacked by his father and his cat with obvious intent to kill, Koji was shaken. He no longer knew who to trust except Chiisai, and the two decided they could trust no one.

The two have managed to avoid capture for a few weeks, mostly because Ryo was found to be the true source of the information leak, making Koji’s role as delivery boy a lesser priority. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, the bite mark on Koji’s arm has gotten infected, and sooner or later, they’re going to need help.

Sunshineverse Abilities/Powers: Koji’s clan has a style that relies heavily on taijutsu and genjutsu. Koji specializes in these areas and falls flat in other places.

Taijutsu: Koji specializes in surprise attacks and one hit kills. His training leans heavily towards waiting for a target, then killing them quickly. In a prolonged battle one-on-one he wouldn’t do very well, but his style is heavily centered around having his cat fighting with him. While he can fight on his own, his small size a choice of close combat weapons puts him at a disadvantage.

Koji mainly relies on thin blades designs for stabbing into a target through their ribcage and bagh nakh, slightly longer and sturdier than the average bagh nakh. He’s proficient with a bow, but usually only uses it for hunting.

Ninjutsu: Koji only knows the very basics of some earth jutsu used to cover tracks and hide bodies.

Genjutsu: Koji’s clan specializes heavily in genjutsu. The ultimate culmination of this is the bond they are able to from with their cats. It’s a mind-to-mind genjutsu powered by chakra from the ninja and the cat. It can be broken, but destroying it completely is very difficult. It functions mostly as an empathetic link between cat and ninja, allowing them to trade emotions and suggestion and sometimes even images. Learning to understand each other is often very difficult, and some partners just content themselves with an empathetic bond.

Koji and Chiisai’s only exceptional ability is their bond. They can understand each other very well and “speak” in simple sentences. If anyone were able to eavesdrop on their conversation, it wouldn’t make much sense, as their speaking is made up of suggestions of images and words that makes sense to them and do not make much sense to others. This makes them far from perfect partners, as they’re both headstrong and Chiisai often has her own ideas about what would be best and likes going over Koji’s head to do things.

Chiisai: The cat has only her natural weapons and the uncanny ability to not be seen when she doesn’t wish to be.

Appearance: Koji stands under five foot and around ninety pounds. He’s wiry and thin, often being mistaken for younger than he is due to his size. He spends the majority of his time outside and generally stays a nutty brown. His hair is a slightly darker, redder brown than his skin, wispy and unruly as it usually sticks up in all directions. If Chiisai’s been grooming him, it turns into a massive mess. His eyes are green.

From his clan Koji has tattoos on his cheeks to mimic the whisker marks on their cat’s faces. Full clan gear requires kohl around the eyes and a smear of white under the eyes. He has a “cat like” face with a pointed chin and slanted eyes. Lately he’s been looking a little gaunt, but living on the run will do that to you.

Koji usually dresses in browns and blacks and greens. He tends to dress traditionally in hakama and gi, wearing armor underneath. He wears a pair of leather gauntlets almost constantly, but there are more for playing with Chiisai than for anything else. He wears a very heavily enforced but flexible breastplate as well.

Chiisai is seven feet from head to tail and weighs around one hundred thirty pounds. She has strong markings on her face, yellow-golden eyes, and a reddish brown coat. She’s on the larger side of a female cat, and is generally regarded as “too big” by the Fukaimori. They favor smaller cats who are more agile and have less difficulty moving through the dense bamboo forests of Kusa.

Personality: Never the easiest person to get along with, Koji’s recent difficulties have made him extremely reluctant to deal with people and very defensive. When he has to deal with people, Koji will either try to bully them into leaving him alone or try to be uninteresting and get left alone. His temper’s very easily roused, and as he has many, many sore points to poke, explosive snarling and swearing and just plain running away is always an option.

Koji thinks with his emotions first and his brain second. He reacts quickly to just about everything, which often gets him into trouble. When he does take the time to sit back and think, it’s usually when he’s not been startled, or feels safe.

Koji was intensely loyal to his clan, but not so much his village. He attaches loyalty to people, not ideas, and is fiercely loyal to those people. He also takes offense very easily, but it’s better not to try and coddle his hurt feelings. He responds best to gruff love and correction and being allowed to keep his dignity. Heart-to-hearts are met with utter scorn. Heaven forbid he should think you’re being condescending.

When Koji is friendly with people, he takes a very aggressive interest in their well being while seeming not to. His main concerns are whether they’re eating enough and staying healthy, though he will take on anyone who’s bothering whoever he considers under his protection. Koji feels a kinship for other small and abused creatures, be they human or other. While an injured adult animal he might kill to end its suffering, Koji will go to great lengths for anything young.

From all his time spent around cats, Koji retains some cat like qualities. He hisses and snarls instead of swearing. He has catlike mannerisms and movements; some of this was instilled in him during training on how to move silently.

Chiisai: In contrast to Koji, Chiisai is generally unflappable and sensible. Being a cat, she doesn’t put as much thought into things as humans would, but her decisions are more logically sound than Koji’s usually due to a good helping of common sense. She’s generally the one demanding Koji stop being “silly” and pay better attention to what’s going on.

Chiisai views all other creatures as a means to an end. She eats what she needs to, takes what Koji and she need to survive, and doesn’t think about the moral issues. She only cares about Koji, and that makes her life much simpler. Well, it would be if Koji would stop being Koji.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

Emotional/mental

-Koji reacts before thinking.

-He’s not the best planner.

-He thinks with his heart rather than his head.

*Chiisai’s a cat with limited planning abilities. Very limited.

Physical:

-Koji is SMALL.

-He lacks a lot outside his field of expertise as a ninja.

-He’s easily overpowers and relies too heavily on Chiisai being with him during a fight.

*Chiisai doesn’t have thumbs.

-* As a team they work well together and few people expect giant cats falling on them.

Random Skills

-Koji can hunt and forage for his own food as he’s been trained to go on long scouting missions and is expected to supply food for himself and his cat.

-Koji can sew simple things and make very good patches.

Prose sample: “Go away, we don’t serve short little street rats,” the boy, probably younger than Koji, held a broom and stood in the doorway of the bakery Koji had been about to enter. He had just enough money for some bread. He really wanted a sweet roll. He’d had meat and raw roots from plants all week and now he just really, really wanted a sweet roll so badly his stomach cramped along his spine.

“I have money,” Koji protested, bad arm tucked in his gi. He could see himself in the window of the shop, dirty and small and looking like he’d been rolling around in the bushes all week, which he had. They’d been avoiding towns and villages and stealing from outlying farms and houses for what they need, but Koji could smell warm buns. He wanted one fresh from the oven and soft.

“‘I have money.’” The boy mocked Koji’s thick accent. Even in Kusa people had mocked his accent because he didn’t form his words fully enough. He wasn’t careful enough when pronouncing, so it made him sound stupid. Koji felt his cheeks flush. “Don’t care. You’re dirty and you smell. You’ve probably got worms.”

Koji snarled. “I do not!” Actually, he might, because that was what happened sometimes when you ate raw vermin. The boy laughed. Koji hissed at him, baring his teeth and wished he had ears to pin to show how truly displeased he was with the boy.

“What are you, some kind of dumb cat?” The boy asked with a grin.

Koji punched the boy in the face with enough force to knock him down. It was quick, ninja reflexes with not much chakra behind them because Koji didn’t have much chakra to spare.

“What’s going on here?” A man demanded. He suddenly filled the doorway, and Koji’s anger quavered. The large man with broad shoulders looked down at Koji. The family resemblance was obvious, and the father’s protective stance behind his son struck something deeper in Koji than thought. He felt a pang, remembering someone with a similar stance between him and antagonists, telling them off for being so cruel to a child. For a moment he couldn’t breath, then Koji snarled one last time and ran.

::Ninja will hear about the angry little cat boy.:: Chiisai muttered sleepily when Koji assured her nothing was wrong. She’d been keeping tabs on him since he’d gone into town.

::Then we keep running.:: They didn’t have any other options. They had to keep moving forever. Until people forgot them and they weren’t even ghosts anymore.

::Then we will be ghosts together.:: Chiisai promised, and that almost made it okay. Almost.

Bracket sample: [It gets hard to tell what’s Chiisai talking and what isn’t when his fever peaks at night. It’s only then Koji begins to feel small and afraid as he hasn’t since he was a child during a thunderstorm, listening to the power of the world outside trying to get in. He fears his body and that his arm will poison him.]

Chiisai? [She’s somewhere near, talking out loud to him in chirps and distressed calls as she noses his neck with her cold face and licks his hair. It hurts. Every movement hurts. She knows it. She doesn’t even have to have a link with him to know he’s hurting and frightened because she can smell it in his sweat. All her instincts must be telling her to leave him. Leave now and get away from this sick and dying, mewling little rot-ridden creature.]

Cat. [She’s curled against his back, purring. The only solid thing in the world.]

Missive Sample: [The missive is written on a scrap of paper in flowing script with several smears.]The lady at the shop was happy to get your package. She said it was even better than the last one. Not sure why birds are better than cats, but she seemed to think so. People are weird, huh? Chiisai and I caught some big fish that were spawning in the river, and she almost ate herself sick on them. I told her not to, but she wouldn’t listen. Now we have to wait for her to sleep it off before we can go on our mission. Everyone keeps looking at us and wondering what we’re still doing here. Like I should be able to make her get up and go after she’s gorged herself.

They’re obviously never tried that one themselves.
