Canon Abilities/Powers:
Sephiroth is, due to his status as the primary antagonist of his series, that guy with all the tricks. Even at his most baseline level of abilities, he's inhumanly fast, strong, and overall, all of his senses and reflexes are heightened to a point beyond anyone else on the planet. He's a master swordsman, and he can teleport, or at the very least bounce from place to place faster than the eye can see.
Later in the series he goes a step further, taking in Jenova fully and becoming someone who can fly, do all manner of magic without materia (such as calling down fire or rocks from the sky, among many many others). He can also reach out past death to manipulate the living at this point and make them into himself if he so wishes. He's shown to manipulate the minds of others, making them see illusions that aren't there. He is also shown to be able to call his blade to hand at a whim.
His ultimate signature is 'Supernova' which is basically death from above in astronomical amounts, while his smaller attacks dedicated to him are Heartless Angel, a draining attack, Octoslash, his ultimate blade move, Shadow Flare, which beats a person up with shadows, and Meteor, rocks from above, in its various incarnations.
However, you do have a chance to look at his equipment as a party member at one point in the game, and he is known to use Revive (brings you back from unconsciousness), Restore (heals you), Earth (attack), Fire (attack), Ice (attack), and Lightning (attack) as his preferred combat magic. He also doesn't seem to take damage, nor does he miss in his attacks.
Sunshineverse History:
Sephiroth's history begins before he was even born. His mother, a woman of the Milani clan, got herself disowned and kicked out after having been found having an affair with a Kaguya. It wasn't safe, as far as they were concerned, and the idea of possibly mixed bloodlines between the two was honestly horrifying for her parents. Thus, she was disowned, even though there was no proof that anything came of it until nearly a year later. By then, her lover had been killed on a mission, and she herself succumbed to blood loss during childbirth.
Sephiroth, understandably, ended up with no family name because of the mess his parents had made of things, and for the first few years of his life, neither family would touch him. The Kaguya wouldn't because he showed none of the signs, even if he showed the coloration that meant maybe he was one of theirs, and neither would the Milani because he looked nothing like a Milani should. In the end, neither family came near him, thus regaling him to one of the few orphanages in the village. Luck would have it that he ended up becoming one of the youngest graduates in Kiri's newly bloodier genin exams. He was six when he killed his way to a rank, having created a crude metal blade from the ground to catch his target unaware.
It was only at this point that the Milani clan finally removed him from the orphanage he'd been kept at and offered him the family name. After all, he'd just shown that he was definitely one of theirs, even if he didn't look it.
He refused the name, preferring to remain independent of their reputation, but he did not fight having a place of his own, small though the apartment was, given he didn't have to pay for it. If they'd chosen to take him in out of anything but a desire for his bloodline, Sephiroth would have more than welcomed them with open arms... but he knew better. He was brilliant even at that age, and knew when people were looking at him as a person as opposed to when they were looking at him as a tool. His family, such as they were, were doing the latter.
This is the reason that later in life, he rarely uses the clan bloodline in the traditional fashion. He's a genius, a prodigy, but that doesn't mean he has any desire to yield to people who would use him for their own means. No, the only ones who had his loyalty were those who he got to know personally. Some were teachers he was almost fond of, others were people he fought with often, but in the end, family members were rarely, if ever, among that number.
Each promotion only reaffirmed this in his mind. Genin at six, chunin at seven, jounin at ten. By the last promotion he was someone untouchable, and had a fearsome reputation in the field as a silver terror. His age was nothing that would keep him out of the conflicts going on with Konoha and Kumo. He created his blade as a chunin, a gift to himself, and a testament that he was more than he appeared. After all, he was small for his age until well after the conflicts had finally stopped, and a six foot blade meant that all told, his Masamune was nearly twice his size. It was, in fact, the start of his moniker. Silver hair, silver blade, and a swath of death let in his wake while people chased shadows into the distance. He was a wraith on the field, and by the time the conflict ended, he was already two years a chunin.
It was a year after the battles finally came to a standstill that he was finally promoted to jounin, and he was, above all, unimpressed. He was mostly brought up to the rank to handle some of the more difficult fighters in his age bracket, as far as he could see, and it left the boy more distanced as he did what he needed to for missions. It was a bad habit he never outgrew.
The more difficult things got, the further he pushed people away, until finally, something had to give. Be it him or the universe, something had to crack, to get through the ice he showed the world and force him to learn how to show his emotions.
In this case, it was the teammate he respected most defecting. It hurt him because he'd never been friendly to the man, and had a sense that somehow, that had been part of the situation that led to him leaving the village. He was wrong, of course, but Sephiroth wasn't always the best when it came to reading people at that age.
After that, he didn't let himself get close to anyone on the field again, and it was, ironically, a child that got under his guard properly, and to whom he actually gave emotion to. He was barely sixteen when they met, and for two years, if asked, not that anyone ever did, he would have had to admit that his tiny still a civilian cousin was his best friend.
And then, she died. At least, he was under the belief she died.
He didn't really forgive her, though technically such a thing shouldn't have been considered her fault. But, that didn't matter to the teenager. People either tried to use him or abandoned him. They lied about their intentions. It made him realize that all connections to others were things to be avoided, not sought after, even silently, and he took several large steps away from any and everyone that he'd been slowly opening up to due to the influence of his baby cousin. If he did, they would just betray him too.
Instead, he would put his faith in being a tool to the village. There was no lie in that. There was no emotional investment, and the most the village would take from him would be his life and body, which was nothing of importance.
Thus, he grew cold, distant, and more cruel than he'd once been, but he was an excellent shinobi, and in the years that passed that was all that mattered. His reputation as Kiri's Silver Terror grew, spreading in the wake of his missions, of the people he commanded, and sometimes left to their fate at the hands of an enemy. The village, the mission, nothing more or less was worth his time.
At least, until he found out that he'd been lied to about his cousin's death. After that? He was just angry after that.
Sunshineverse Abilities/Powers:
Ninjutsu::
Kekkai Dota:
Due to the way he was trained, and his personal abilities, Sephiroth has master his mother's clan's Kekkai Dota, Metal Release, which means that he is incredibly adept at using the separate elements of it, Fire, Earth, and Water, on their own, and in a variety of combinations. He can pull a freshly made blade from the ground if there is rich enough soil, and he is known to almost absently eliminate flames coming near him by either stifling them with earth, drowning them in water, or both at once to leave visible cooled lava-like results in his wake.
Oddly, in spite of his skill and masterly over his kekkai dota, he almost never uses it as the metal creating and changing ability it is meant to be. In fact, unless someone in the squad he's leading is desperately in need of a weapon, the only time he uses it in combat is to fix and reinforce his masterwork, the Masamune, as he would never let it become damaged or worn to the point where it might break. At other times, he uses the ability to call said blade through the ground to him so that it might seem like he can forge something so refined without thought. It's a favorite intimidation tactic of his, actually, but rarely used, as he does not like to have his blade away from his person, even when moving through the streets of his village.
Instead, his preferences lay in using the elements he's mastered individually. Kiri's signature mist attack is one he likes to use to great advantage, and it's not unheard of that he would send a fireball flying through it or lash out with one of his earth attacks to deal with a particularly tricky problem.
Basic Jutsu:
Outside of his clan abilities, Sephiroth has a strong love of not being where he's expected to be. He's well known for abusing Kawarimi on the battle field, and tends to keep feathers on his person so even his replacements leave nothing substantial to hit, meaning that his opponents are left stumbling. He's also decent with Shunshin, but he will always prefer properly getting out of the way to just being fast.
Taijutsu:
Sephiroth is a Swordsman to the core. He's fast, strong, and incredibly hard to beat. It's argued that he could have been one of the seven swordsman, but he's never had any willingness to replace his blade with one of the legendaries, to say nothing of the fact that he didn't care for the idea being part of such a high profile political unit. Instead, he would rather be a person fighting from the front of a battle, even if challenges to his swordplay are very few and far between.
His hand to hand skills are decent, above passable even, but if somehow he was brought down to just hand to hand, the man would be at something of a loss if the other party could overtake his sheer speed and strength. It's not his most practiced ability, in spite, or perhaps because, of how sturdy he is.
Genjutsu:
Sephiroth is fond of mind games, and that's why he ever got into Genjutsu. He's determined that it's beautiful to mislead, and only ever uses it for misdirection, such as sending people tearing off under the impression a comrade sent them a certain way, or outright taunts as he henges to be said person, often by having killed them first out of sight. He sees nothing wrong with using people's emotions and concerns against them, and this is his preferred way of doing so. He finds it much more tasteful than killing people with Genjutsu, as he deems that completely without anything resembling grace.
On the other side of the coin, Sephiroth rarely gets caught in Genjutsu himself, but when he does, it takes him a little bit to notice. He can, usually, break out of anything inflicted on him quickly once he's aware.
Physical:
Sephiroth is sturdy. Absurdly sturdy in fact, and it's been rumored more than once that he's got two Kekkai. He doesn't, of course, but that doesn't stop his heritage from manifesting in other ways. He's inherently harder to hurt, has a high pain tolerance, and is, simply put, very fast. His vision has always been highly exceptional, though no one knows where his eye shape could have come from, and he's incredibly sensitive to any kind of input, be it hearing, smells, touch, taste, or sight.
He heals quickly, though not quite visibly so, and for some reason doesn't seem to ever scar, even when medical intervention is needed.
He also, after a great deal of practice and effort, has managed to bring himself up to being able to sense, and identify, the chakra of others. This ability, however, requires them to be within a fairly close radius to actually work.
Appearance: Sephiroth stands at 6'1", very rarely wears anything that is not black, and seems to have a bit of a vendetta against shirts. He has a long sweeping black jacket he can most often be seen in that hits his ankles, and it contrasts sharply to the rest of his appearance. His hair is a metallic silvery instead of the more common white that Kiri people tend to have, and as he's never cut it, hits his knees when loose. His bangs are the only exception to this, coming just below his chin. His skin is pale, though this is partially due to almost always being covered from head to toe, and he's rarely seen without gloves. His eyes are unusual, being a bright green with a feline pupil instead of the typical round iris. No one has been able to sort out the why of his appearance however.
Personality:
Sephiroth is a man with determination, or as some would call it, stubbornness. If he believes that he's right and correct, he will go to the ends of the earth to carry out his will. He's just fortunate that thus far in his life, what he considers right and correct happens to line up with what the village considers right and correct. By this philosophy, people are tools, and their merits are very largely weighed by the strength of their determination, and the use he can get out of them to accomplish whatever his current goal happens to be. It makes him a harsh taskmaster on missions. Unfortunately, it also means that if someone is going to have to die for a mission to be completed, then he will allow that person to die. It doesn't make him a popular commander, but it also means that so long as people don't get themselves in a mess, he'll make sure that everyone comes home. After all, a dead shinobi is a useless shinobi.
By this coin, it could be said that Sephiroth has some compassion for his fellow shinobi. The person saying that would, of course, be wrong. He is a practical man. He uses what's around him, and who is around him, to the fullest extent. He doesn't trust people for themselves. Trusting people leads to pain, and Sephiroth refuses to succumb to the impracticality of pain without a very good reason. Sympathy for the sake of sympathy has never seemed like a good reason to him. In fact, so far as he's concerned, it's the kind of reason that can get a man killed. But, this in and of itself has been an asset for him. In being unapproachable, Sephiroth is seen as reliable, a steady force when things might be going very badly. It means his teams often take more dangerous missions with less casualties because nerves are not as high.
Sephiroth never forgets anything. If he loved you, if he hated you, he will remember. He never forgets, and he definitely never forgives. His emotions are the reason for this, as under his facade of uncaring, he's truly, deeply invested in what goes on around him. He manipulates others because it appeases his need to make things happen how he wants them to, and he's incredibly selective with any affections he extends. So far, all that's taught him is that unfortunately, when one extends their affections, one is going to have them stolen, trashed, and returned in a mangled heap. He doesn't forget the defection or death of anyone who might fall within this category, and he never lets go of them. Then again, he also never forgives them, and often, in his world, if he can no longer love you, then he must hate you to protect himself.
Even by the standards of a Kiri shinobi, Sephiroth is an arrogant man. He plays with those who are less powerful than him out of boredom. He pokes and prods to prey on insecurities to get what he wants. And above all, he doesn't let it affect him personally. He is what he is, and so far as he's concerned, if you can't match him, you're beneath him, and that's nothing that will change. If he takes an interest in spite of that however? May there be mercy on that person, because he will expect them to do nothing but give him perfection until he's satisfied that they are worth his time.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
+ Physically powerful
+ Kekkai Dota
+ Incredibly smart
+ Practical
+/- Arrogant/Proud
+/- Doesn't trust people
+/- Never forgets a person
- Cold to people
- Completely lacks empathy
- Physically oversensitive to everything

[He hated using the scroll system. He found it to be insecure, filled with people who could easily spy on a correspondence, and overall, aggravating. Then again, part of his frustration with it might be his complete lack of knowledge about most seals. He could open a storage seal, he could use a seal when presented to him whole cloth. He did not, however, have any idea how to keep anyone who pleased from seeing his missives and it rankled that he had to have help. Still, he'd gotten a seal off someone, which he applied to the paper before him with care, eying it critically and doing his best to memorize it. Maybe next time he wouldn't need to have someone make one for him. His voice was low, and steady, showing none of his irritation.]
It's time to leave. If you linger, I will not be responsible for for your deaths.
Missive Sample:
Nightroad,
I'm fully aware that you have no desire for correspondence, given your frightened flight from the country a week ago, but I have been told that if I can return you, you might be pardoned your poor decision. Grief is an understandable cause for such a flight, after all, the Mizukage is not without understanding. You must, however, surrender in no less than three days time for this to be acceptable, as it will be presumed that you received this letter whether or not you ever read it. I do hope you return, as having to give information about your habits to the hunter nin is not something I'm particularly pleased to have to do. I have full expectation that you will return when you see sense.
