Rin Okumura

Name: Rin Okumura

Canon: Blue Exorcist

Character Journal: [personal profile] pinnedbangs

Gender: male

Age: 15

Birthday: December 27th

Canon History: History! Right below that is a synopsis.

Canon Abilities/Powers:

Blue Flames: Rin has inherited them from Satan, his biological father. While the flames are known for their destructive powers and have been used as a source of evil and to cause fear, Rin's flames have a different quality to them. Their powers of destruction are still evident within him, but he is able to maintain the potency of his fire. His friends and allies are safe while demons, monsters, and possessed humans may not fare too well. The flames have been used as a catalysis for his emotions and (in one case) as a cure to a demonic miasma.

Super Strength: Rin had always been abnormally strong for his age. Before his awakening, Rin had displayed enough power to easily lift a car. He had broken the ribs of his adoptive father at the age of five. His classmates, those who had picked on others weaker than them, were often dealt with by Rin and his one-hit KO punch. After his awakening as a half-demon, his strength has been significantly augmented. He keeps it under control for the most part, but he tends to forget his own strength on more than one occasion. To him, it is absolutely normal to be able to lift metal beams.

Regeneration: Due to his demonic heritage, Rin can recover from injuries with some ease. He has been through a range of injuries, from being stabbed through with a sword, having his leg chopped off (and reattached) and falling from great heights. He’s been thrown against walls more often than he can count. Rin generally recovers from these injuries from a few minutes to a few hours. His regenerative abilities also protect him from demonic illness that would otherwise greatly affect his human friends.

Telepathy: Though it does not extend to humans or animals, Rin can understand and communicate with other demons. Most speak to him directly to his mind, while others attempt verbalizing their thoughts. Recently, Rin has been able to sense demons and gauge how powerful they are compared to him. It’s an ability he had been practicing on his own, without the interference of his twin brother.

Sword Fighting: The majority of his power and his true appearance are stored within the sword. Rin’s true appearance is a frightening one. The blue flames surround him entirely and form twin horns upon his head. His tail, normally tucked away, lashes out with a blue flame tip. His ears and teeth have elongated and his eyes take on a more feral appearance. When it is kept sheathed then he looks more human, if one were to ignore the sharp teeth, pointed ears, and tufted tail.

He is a terrible sword fighter. Rin’s method involves swinging his sword around as wildly as possible. When it hits an opponent, it really doesn’t matter how sloppy his technique is. He is learning how to be a better swordsman from his teacher Shura Kirigakure. She’s taught him how to work more methodically with his sword and how to rely on it as an extension of himself instead of a shiny metal rod.

Sunshine History: An off shoot of the Yuki clan, the Okumura clan was as ruthless as their bloodline cousins. The combination of wind/fire release, amplified the deadly power of fire – so much so that the fire used by this clan was a nearly white shade of blue. It was said that members of the clan could burn a person from the inside out, leaving no immediate trace of the terrible damage within. Some members of the clan even to this day display some of the physical attributes of the Okumura: pointed ears, sharp fangs, and startling blue eyes, which oftentime pointed to the fire within.

Long ago, they had been as formidable as the other clans, their blue flames scorching everything in their paths. Members of the clan were said to be like wild beasts, running amok within the battlefield and ensuring a quick, but messy, victory. Even then, the bloodline was rare – a threat to the generation it appeared in but an unmistakable weapon for the greater war.

However the wars had occurred less and less, though the tension remained. The Okumura clan had not demonstrate any strong bloodline traits in generations. It had already been unusual in its appearance and carefully guarded, but for it to fade away was a cause of great unease amongst some of the more distinguished clan members. Without the power, they had to find other ways to contribute to their village. Some adapted to civilian life. They took on odd jobs, excelling in some of the more mundane aspects of day to day activities. Others were looking towards a shinobi lifestyle, but they no longer actively seeked promotion past chunin rank. It would be an honor but the younger generations were caring less and less. They still kept their secrets guarded carefully – but the elders faced each new generation with growing anger. Without the bloodline, they could do nothing. They were not taken seriously as a clan. In recent years, they were known as a capable support system for more powerful Kiri-nin. They could be counted on in the middle of a fight to act as a decoy if need be, they were sturdy, dependable, known for a legendary bloodline that remained a pretty story.

Most of the younger generation seemed pleased by this turn of events, but the elders were livid with how little the newer generations cared. They felt as if their village had seen them as too strong and to add insult to injury, they had not produced a single proper shinobi to add their village – to prove just how capable a true Okumura could be. These feelings meant nothing to the newer generations, who had adjusted to civilian life so well it was difficult to say that they had once been so feared.

Until the birth of Rin Okumura.

Born the eldest twin to Yuri Egin and a missing nin of Kiri, Rin was a hot-blooded but kind hearted child. The boys lived with their adoptive father, Shiro Fujimoto, who took care of them the best that he could.

Growing up in Kiri often did not allow children to remain children, especially once their training as shinobi began. Fujimoto was a man of firm beliefs. He didn’t mind shinobi, so long as they respected human life. Needless to say, Fujimoto did his best to raise his sons with that mind. At seven, both children attended the academy with varying results. (I’ll leave Yukio out). Rin was terrible at academics but he was a quick learner once he was able to move his body around. He quickly mastered basic ninjutsu and taijutsu. His performance earned the attention of the Okumura clan leaders.

It came as no surprise to Fujimoto to receive a summons from the Okumura clan leaders, requesting for more information of the boys daily training. Fujimoto obliged, but only to keep the clan from encroaching further into his home life. It was decided after a quick demonstration of both boy’s prowess that the clan leaders would wait until the graduation exam to make their decision.

Fujimoto may have hoped that neither boys would show signs of the bloodline. At age 10, Rin had proved that he had the potential to become a great shinobi for Kiri and he was ready to take his graduation exam. It was a notion that did not sit well with Fujimoto, especially because of Rin’s temper. Had Rin not been as powerful as he was, Fujimoto wouldn’t have worried as much about his son becoming corrupted. While he felt there was nothing to fear, he knew that it would only be a matter of time until one of the twins displayed the bloodline trait.

Rin had almost triumphed over his opponent when he had been momentarily overwhelmed. Shocked, Rin unconsciously struck out with the force of his flames. The Okumura clan, having discovered Rin’s talents, made sure that he was trained immediately under their care and supervision. Kiri was harsh, but it was more so for those part of a clan. Rin was taken away as soon as he was declared the victor. Fujimoto attempted to take him back, but to no avail. Rin was still allowed home, but all of his time was spent in the older rooms of a dead generation. Here Rin learned the secret arts, which he picked up at a snail’s pace.

The Okumura clan, despite Rin’s innocent nature, still felt more confident than they had in ages. They knew that here was the weapon they had waiting for. It would take time to groom him, but they did not mind. They felt as if they had all the time in the world. Rin tried to learn as quickly as possible, hoping to please the clan or his father with something amazing. While he continued his training, Fujimoto decided the best way to ensure that Rin would not lose sight of himself was to continue parenting him from afar.

At a young age, Rin had become a seasoned fighter with a better understanding of his kekei genkai and chakra natures – but he hardly understood himself. Rin was torn between making his adoptive father proud and becoming as amazing as the Okumura clan wanted him to be. He continued to rise up the shinobi ladder, becoming a chunin at 12 and taking on smaller missions on his own at 13.

It was when he had returned back home from one of these missions had he really understood what Fujimoto had been trying to teach him. Rin understood every life was important and that every person had family somewhere, at some point. He kept that in mind when he carried out his objectives or as he decided whether or not to punch an idiot’s face I for making fun of his brother. But it wasn’t until he help a dying Fujimoto in his arms did he realize just how precious a life was.

A missing nin had reappeared in their village, and wasted no time targeting Fujimoto. Rin arrived home too little too late, but he did his best to fight off the missing nin, to save Fujimoto before the inevitable befell him. It was only after the attack that Rin learned the name of the assailant: Okumura, his “real” father.

Rin sworn on Fujimoto’s grave that he would find the man – that other Okumura – and put an end to him.

…It certainly seemed like good enough motivation to the rest of the clan.

Sunshine Abilities/Powers:

kekei genkai: Blue Flames – Rin’s flames in particular are incredibly destructive but he has it under control due to quick intervention. He displays a fine understanding of his wind and fire chakras, so much so that he can force the flames to directly assault a tiny portion of the human body. They can become missiles for him during long range battle, or a corrosive armor in short range attacks. He can extend the flames out of his body, but to do so expends a lot of chakra. He prefers to concentrate the bulk of his flames into his sword, Komaken, in order to cut through foes and to narrow his control to only the most vital of organs.

kenjutsu: As his weapon of choice, Rin has gained a moderate understanding kenjutsu. Though he is more likely to swing around his sword during practice, he tends to leave it sheathed during missions in order to better keep his position hidden. When engaging in battle, Rin swings hard.

genjutsu: He sucks. Rin would like to be able to break through any illusion but it seems too complex for him. In reality, he finds genjutsu to be a boring way to end a battle. He’d much prefer to be hands on.

taijutsu: Had Rin been denied the choice of a sword for his weapon, he would have gladly chosen his body instead. In order to better control his bloodline, Rin prefers to be in top physical condition. For his ambitions (hunter-nin) he need not have such a showy bloodline. He knows his sword glows when drawn so he has molded his body to work as a powerful weapon and extension of his skill. A well placed punch can be imbued with both chakra natures, causing the attack to deal far more damage.

Ninjutsu: though his primary weapon is his sword, Rin is able to employ the use of shuriken and kunai. He tends to combine his ninjutsu with his taijutsu (again tied to the bloodline).

Sensory: As in canon, Rin is still realizing the full potential of this skill. His increased chakra sensitivity had always been with him since his childhood, but he had no understanding of how it worked or what it meant. He kept it to himself simply because he didn’t see it as important. Currently, he is undergoing training to refine it.

Strength: His chakra naturally augmented his strength as a child, so much so that he never gave it much thought. This was especially helpful for him during his days as an academy student.

Appearance: If asked, Rin will proudly declare that he was 5’ 8”, but he looks like he’s all gangly limbs due to being at that age of growing. Having growing pains had not helped with his awkward movements and generally klutziness. Rin tends to keep everything but himself and his room in neat condition. His clothes are always thrown on, his hair a huge mess. In certain lighting, it takes on a bluish hue. Rin’s eyes are easily his most startling physical aspect. They are a deep and unsettling blue. Within the pupils a pinprick of red can be seen, but only when his kekei genkai is activated. His smile is full of sharp teeth and his ears are slightly pointed, but despite the feral appearance, he is quite genial.

Personality: The Blue Demon, Rin Okumura, was known as a skilled fighter who did not hesitate with his actions. He was a monster, a literal weapon of mass destruction, who was entirely loyal to Kirigakure. His actions were ruthless, his fire a beacon of fear. Rin was known as the best example of the Okumura clan – a child who could take care of business, so to speak. Well, take care of business if he felt like taking care of business and if he didn’t screw it up.

Growing up in Kiri often did not allow children to remain children, especially once their training as shinobi began. Before his talents were known, Rin was a compassionate and passionate child. Rin tends to see the world in black and white: either you were a person who was going to be good to him (and his family) or you were a jerk-faced loser and needed a kick to the head. Rin’s only companion was his twin brother, to which he had no immediate complaints. He took care of Yukio and that was all that mattered to him. After all, he was the big brother and it meant a lot to Rin to be able to use his power in order to help out instead of causing more fear than necessary.

But it hadn’t stopped the children and adults from being both scornful and afraid of him. When Rin was angry, he was terrifying. He would fly into a rage fueled more by tantrum than anything else at the young age of 4 in order to follow the ideals he already had in place. He attacked those who dared to cross his family and call him a monster, a worthless kid in a worthless clan, the brother of a cry-baby, the son of a missing-nin. Even so, within Kirigakure, only the strong survived and endured. Rin survived and generally he endured. Mostly, Rin learned and he thrived.

He continued to survive all through his Academy days (where he was still feared as a monster despite his best efforts to change their minds) to his genin. Rin wanted to prove his worth to everyone, so that they could all see that he wasn’t as monstrous as they feared him to be. Rin may have been Kiri-raised, but he had a huge heart, perhaps a heart too big for Kirigakure. He would have failed during his Academy years were it not for his overwhelming strength and inclination towards taijutsu. He would have certainly failed his exam were it not for his bloodline activating just at the right (or wrong) moment. He wanted the villagers to accept him as he was – and to prove that he was more than just an angry kid with hard punches. He thought that since he had those blue flames, he would have been accepted with open arms. This was both true and false.

Kiri was harsh, but it was more so for those part of a clan. The Okumura clan, having discovered Rin’s talents after his graduation, made sure that he was trained immediately under their care and supervision. Rin couldn’t believe that he had been specially chosen to learn a whole new secret art and lots of other amazing things about the family he never knew. To say he was elated would have been an understatement. He did his best to show that they had not chosen wrong. But he also wanted to do his best to make his mother and Fujimoto proud.

To Rin, Fujimoto was the father he had never known. Rin greatly admired Fujimoto, despite being an unruly child. Even with Rin’s gruff nature, he can be surprisingly courteous towards certain people, such as women, very young children, older people who seemed respectable, and certain instructors in the academy.

As a genin he got into all sorts of trouble by being “helpful”. In Rin’s eyes, everyone needed help in one way or another. He targeted bullies within his class and made sure that they had suffered (physically) fir any sort of wrongs they had done. If he were on one of his many D-rank missions, he went out of his way to make sure everything went well – even if he were to inadvertently cause the most accidents. Rin didn’t like to see people trampled on or insulted. He felt that if he could do something to make that one person feel better, than he would feel better too. He didn’t have an ambition to be a great defender – he simply wanted to abide by his black and white rules: if you’re good, you get a free pass. If you’re bad and do bad things, then you deserved to not have teeth. It just so happened that he was ready to dole out the punches. And when he did help, he tended to put others in more pain. So his little world was challenged and expanded.

Being forced away from his home with Fujimoto and his brother during his training with the Okumura clan had not helped him reconcile the feelings of inadequacy he harbored. Rin was not a perfect shinobi; he knew when his team returned home from the missions they were upset that he held back. He was not the perfect son, bringing home the best grades or even a good report once in a while. The villagers who had openly scorned him before now looked at him with loathing and a greater sense of fear than before. They knew now what Rin was hesitant to admit: he was being trained to become a better weapon, another great shinobi to be added to the Kirigakure arsenal.

So what was there for him to do? Rin decided that the best way to do this was to become a better shinobi, but the sort of Cool Guy Shinobi that his adoptive father had built up for him to aspire to be. It was his ideal Shinobi, the sort of man who not only respected and valued life but the lives of those who had to pass on due to the challenges of being a ninja. Rin kept a small journal (a list, really) about all the things a respectable shinobi does, and he makes sure to update it as frequently as possible with anything new and exciting he might have learned

But as the years went by and Rin turned 12, he realized that there wasn’t much point in doing all that. He hadn’t really helped anyone. If anything, he succeeded in cementing his reputation as a monstrous kid. It would only get him into trouble with his clan who needed him to be bother ruthless and obedient. He went from feeling excited to learn to not caring in the least. What was the point of being strong, of having all that power, if he was only going to get scolded (and worse) just for trying to help? He didn’t try nearly as much anymore, much to the chagrin of his clan.

After the death of his adoptive father, something in Rin changed. Yes, he was still a bull-headed child ready to defend others when need be and yes, he was still a force to be reckoned with (and growing stronger) but he had a renewed purpose for his actions. He had a much better reason now to go for the highest rank possible – an ANBU? A hunter-nin? It didn’t matter which. He was going to find his father (that missing-nin coward) – and put an end to him for what he did to Fujimoto.

Rin’s as brash as he is passionate, an empathetic young man who has a slight case of tunnel vision. In some ways, he is as typical as any fifteen year old: he is noticing the other sex, his confidence wavers from great highly to low lows, and he has moments when he feels as if he can do anything. He is invincible! Nothing could possibly hurt him! The world belonged to him! And, for the most part, he wouldn’t be wrong in thinking that. But his empathy tends to steer him away from the shinobi path.

Rin hasn’t had much reason to smile and tends to scowl more often than not, but he does have a bright smile hidden under his grumpy visage. He tended to listen more often than not, preferring to work from behind than to barge up front – unless he felt a direct need to barge forward and demand things – but this sort of attitude was reserved for those who knew him well, who knew that getting him to lash out like that either took something that greatly annoyed him or it would involve someone close.

When he is on a mission, Rin may not seem entirely thoughtful but he makes sure to take every situation on the field very seriously. He loved his brother just as fiercely, though he was more adapt to taking on the role of the protector when they were small. (I’ll leave out Yukio.)

Rin may have been a ferocious fighter but he cared far too much. He saved animals from traps, took care of birds who couldn’t fly, protected his brother and doted on him all the same. Rin wanted to be respected but he wanted to be a better person first, someone who was worthy of that respect. His clan showed him he could be respected through his kekei genkai. Fujimoto showed him how to be respected through his actions. Rin tries hard to reconcile both ideologies.

At times, Rin was very introspective. He was brash but as he grew older, he became more introspective and not as likely to instigate conflict. He only attacked when he was provoked, targeting only when they came between him and his ideals. Rin rules his decisions on these ideals, believing that it will make him a better person.

Strengths and Weaknesses:

+ Rin, despite all odds, remains incredibly optimistic. He sees no reason to be down on himself when he can still make a situation better. But…

+ - …Rin tends to become very insecure. After losing his father, losing touch with his brother, and generally being alone, he isn’t a social butterfly – but he wants to make friends. He doesn’t know how to go about it. As such, he can come off as either very weird or pretty awkward, given the situation. Rin tries to be either as enthusiastic as possible or fairly nonchalant. Neither really work for him.

+ He can cook a good meal. It is a hobby of his that he tends to take care of when he isn’t on missions. His specialties are one-pot dishes. Rin’s favorite is sukiyaki.

+ - Rin, while being the embodiment of (occasionally false) optimism, can turn into an outright stubborn mess if not carefully monitored. He won’t go completely against orders (per say) but he will try to find a loop hole.

+ -At times, he only smiles when he’d rather cover up for his own shortcomings. He tries to laugh at himself, much like his adoptive father had.

+ - Rin isn’t an academic, even in the loosest sense of the term. He prefers to work hands on. Give him and book and he’s likely to stare at it in confusion.
