Sunshineverse History: To understand Masanori Shizuoka, one must first understand the history that precedes him.

During the Warring States Period, in which ninja held to small mercenary clans living only for battle, the Shizuoka clan did not exist in name. Rather, they were called the Onigumo and they ranked among the strongest, most insidious clans of the era. They held themselves to the highest standards with efficiency close to the figurative heart and laid the best plans to fully utilize their resources and accomplish their goals with low costs and great accuracy. When and where they were known, rumors surrounded them and it often happened that wherever an Onigumo went, more rumors followed. Subtle and subversive, their plans and results were often not evident to outsiders and few events invoked by them could, in modern times, be traced to them with certainty in an overwhelming majority of cases save where their handiwork was some measure of direct.

Demons. Monsters. Man-eaters. You name it, they were called it and for good reason. While known for their powerful genjutsu techniques, their proficiency in venom and poisons, their subsequent resistance to such and heightened threshold for pain, they were best known for their affinity for and contract with arachnids and their ability to fuse with their summons and become the demon spiders for which they were named. It was not uncommon for members of the clan to consume their targets or leave the battlefield a sea of blood with bone and flesh to serve as the occasional buoy. For this, they were feared, hated, and not unduly so. A dictatorship in the strictest sense of the word, the clan acted as its head dictated and, no doubt with the occasional discrepancy in action, amassed countless enemies for their efforts.

Even demons have their allies, however, and the Onigumo stood as staunch supporters of the Uchiha, who were egocentric enough to have little care with regards to how the body count racked up so long as it did. As time marched on, the Onigumo realized the weariness of those under the Senju and Uchiha banners prematurely and foresaw some change on the horizon. It was realized, too, that adaptation would be key to their survival in the coming era. While it was not by any means a smooth transition, the clan ultimately acted accordingly and the Onigumo disappeared from history in the years preceding the founding of Konohagakure with many tales attributed to the cause. Shortly after Konohagakure's founding, the Shizuoka clan, quiet and near unrecognizable to all save an informed few, came to Konohagakure and sat quietly upon their web behind the Uchiha, a red sun rising over a white hill as their new crest.

What followed was further change so that by modern times the dictatorial workings of the clan had expanded rather than dissolved. A single spider sat at the middle of his finely crafted web as its absolute ruler became several elder spiders finely attuned to the vibrations of the finely crafted web with a younger figurehead serving as the 'official' clan head. Ever subtle and insidious, the Shizuoka's personal politics are a tangled thing. They are active, albeit subtle, in village politics and continue to support the Uchiha to this day, their personal history a well-kept secret both to facilitate ease of movement and keep embers of hatred from a bygone era cold. Within that regard, they succeeded, but not everything was to be peaceful and benign.

The clan saw some quiet malevolence rise when, following the end of the Third Shinobi World War, the heir of that time failed to pass the brutal trial to inherit clan leadership and the reins officially came into the hands of one of the elders. The would-be heir of that time was naturally furious. He was that much more when suspected sabotage was all but confirmed, but there was little that could be done about it for how well laid his father's plans were. Thus, he had to grit his teeth, bear his shame, and, naturally, make the quietest of plans to even the scales for the clan's sake.

It was easier said than done. What unease began to brew among Shizuoka ranks for what seemed a potentially unending change in leadership was often quickly silenced by the charismatic leader and his support. Order was maintained. "Was."

Enter Masanori, son of the failed successor, grandson of the current leadership, and standing heir to the Shizuoka clan and its legacy. From the time of his birth, eyes were set upon him. While it happened in some cases that there was some measure of affection behind said eyes, he was increasingly greeted with envy for his birthright, resentment, and, as he came into walking age and his clan began to train him, perceived hatred for literal or perceived failure and, or poor aptitude, which might have had something to do with his being the product of a shame many clansmen believed should have been erased.

Suffice to say his was a short lived childhood. Having come into an environment rife with politics, he had to adapt on all levels and quickly if he hoped to survive. The Onigumo may have changed their name and banner, but their brutality had never left them and while the solidarity of the clan and the importance of their humanity was something stressed, it was impossible to ignore the duality and certain seeming contradictions rampant about them throughout their history as Masanori learned and saw it. His parents, who were themselves quite odd, were more help than he knew; though, his relationship with them was often strained. Their manners all around were not quite normal even by Shizuoka standards and his father in particular seemed to favor the other children, which struck a note of discord in the young heir not helped by rising tensions. Thus, his most trustworthy ally would happen to be Miourugumo, the young spiderling he received upon taking up his clan's traditional summoning contract with the spiders of Kashikobuchi at a very young age, and the two would soon become nearly inseparable.

Masanori grew. More than that, he observed. He learned, and quickly, how to catch flies with honey and vinegar, how to weave webs with words and silk, and he did so subtly. He adhered to the clan's training and did what was asked of him increasingly with a smile, but the insidious nature of the clan was strong in him and he often feigned disinterest or fumbling even as he picked up swiftly where intended and unintended. He picked up that much more for the spiders' sometimes unwitting assistance and grew exponentially faster than his clan knew, which suited him fine. He had made up his mind and was, after all, biding his time.

It was not until Masanori entered the Academy that he would begin to make waves. The clan valued two things: results and subtlety. The last thing he blew out of the water by brazenly attracting attention to himself. He kept the clan's secrets and worked to assimilate everything he was taught by not only them, but his teachers at the Academy. He did this well and kept the true extent of his progress to himself, glimmering but not quite shining. His presentation alongside his seeming lack of studiousness, while no doubt grating to teachers, was a point of distress for the clan elders especially and that was how he liked it. They tried to correct it, but he wouldn't bend, nor would he retract into the den with the village more open to him than it had ever been.

If only he'd noticed how his father smiled for it.

Despite his antics, Masanori continued to train and hone his skills as subtly as possible. Graduating the Academy at twelve, he certainly didn't look like anything special...

Sunshineverse Abilities/Powers:

Weaponry. Near fresh from the Academy with his clan's early training in support, Masanori is skilled in the basics of shuriken and kunai. He is most proficient in his use of wire, however, and stands as a genius in the application thereof. His wires tend to be unique to his clan, forged from the silk of the Shizuoka spiders, and near invisible to the naked eye. Due to his clan's quietly brutal methodology, he has more practical experience than many his age and if you're looking for a trap weaver? Well, you found the hands down best one, what with Masanori being a Shizuoka and a genius among them in terms of trapmaking and laying.

Ninjutsu. He has a firm handle on the basic E-rank jutsu (Bunshin, Henge, Kakuremino, Nawanuke, Kawarimi) Academy students are taught and can perform them more than adequately. He is also being actively trained in the techniques of his clan and is quicker than average with hand seals.

Taijutsu. This is the area in which Masa is most lacking. Quick and nimble as spiders are, the Shizuoka tend toward precise strikes to settle matters when they must engage directly, physically. As such, taijutsu is not necessarily essential to their style. His endurance is respectable to his age and he has a grasp on the basics per the Academy and his clan's training, but that's about it.

Genjutsu. Hailing from a clan that specializes in genjutsu, it should be no surprise that Masanori is well ahead of his age group in this particular field. Precise chakra control has been stressed from birth and it shows across the board. He is leaps and bounds ahead of his peers in recognizing and dispelling genjutsu and has a firm grasp on the basics and then some. He is regularly instructed by his elders in Shizuoka clan technique.

Summon. Masanori holds to the clan specific contract of his ancestors. As such, his contract is with arachnids, granting him access to a myriad of predators that hunt and feed differently and are therefore capable of performing different functions within and outside of battle. (Please take a moment to consider their potency to scale as this is Naruto and many of these summons grow to be exceptionally large.) As clan heir, he is expected to be proficient in working with all types and have a positive working relationship with them, two goals he is working toward with great speed.

His personal summon is a chimaeric lady spider by the name of Miourugumo. A highly venomous trapweaver-hunter hybrid, she is roughly the size of football at her current age. Her silk is many times stronger than steel and can be woven to greater effects if utilized in conjunction with chakra abilities. That is, like many Shizuoka spiders, she is capable of siphoning, transferring, and applying chakra via her web and fangs. The type of chakra applied may have a logical effect on her silk, such as creating flaming or cutting silk in the case of katon and fuuton respectively; however, being the partner of a younger shinobi, she has yet to learn and practically apply techniques involving nature transformations. Despite being a summon, she is usually in Masanori's company and the two are exceedingly close.

Bloodline Limit. He's definitely got one. Details to come!

Other. As a result of the Shizuoka clan's unique and ongoing conditioning, Masanori is highly resistant to toxins. A beneficial side effect of this conditioning is that his threshold for pain is exceptionally high. He possesses very strong chakra and an average, but growing reserve expected to exceed average given his clan's dietary habits during the Warring States period. He is an excellent weaver, knitter, and sewer and has some knowledge about working with Shizuoka spider silk. He is also able to understand and communicate with arachnids and insects.

Appearance: A result of selective breeding due to the occasional need for wartime body doubles and quite possibly or a side of interbreeding that never produced the sharingan, if one were to place Masanori in the middle of a gaggle of Uchiha, he would pass. Ruffle his curls to make his hair a bit more unkempt and stifle or abet the ahoge tomato stem atop his head and he's a shoe-in with his bright, onyx-colored eyes and long lashes that could easily see him teased by people who don't know any better. He's slight in appearance and not at all that tall at twelve years. Whatever his apparel, he's rarely seen without a hood or backpack to mask and accommodate the large spider that regularly accompanies him.
Personality: Masanori Shizuoka is a trainwreck that typically presents as possessing many traits one wouldn't want in a shinobi, let alone in the heir of one of the most insidious clans to grace the unwitting world with its bloody presence. An ostentatious youth, he acts poignantly to draw attention when and where his clan especially would prefer he be subtle. Melodramatic with a leaning toward being wholly inappropriate, tactless, and somewhat perverse, he's the sort of seeming kid that smiles bright and easy even as he dispenses some shocking declaration that may or may not turn the room upside down, inside out, and violent if not simply quiet or panicked. It happens more often than not that he's disrespectful toward his peers and elders, for that matter, an seemingly without regard for consequences. He's also quite selfish, but especially where it concerns food. This especially applies to his beloved manju and soba, which are the two fastest tracks to ease him into ridiculous territory. Manju is life. Soba cures depression.

Of course, he can be a perfect little angel if you ask the right person, namely women and usually at the market or thereabouts. He's got ample charm and he knows very well how to crank up the volume. He's even capable of acting mostly respectable, but well, he's a Shizuoka and what's surprising shouldn't really be surprising.

That's right. In reality, it's mostly an act. A Shizuoka through and through, Masanori is an insidious creature and subtle in very particular ways. A living, breathing example of, "Still waters run deep," he is a brilliant youth with cunning in support of ample intelligence and he likes good and well to be many steps ahead period. He thinks fast and critically and, despite being merely twelve, weaves complicated webs and makes adjustments to them as needed so as to achieve his goals in no less than a timely fashion. He holds himself to higher standards than any twelve year old has a right to, but this is seldom a surprise considering the brutality he was subject to throughout his upbringing.

Having grown up in a clan rife with politics immediately concerning his person and suffered exposure to family who either hated, envied, or felt both toward him and, in some cases, sought to use him for his position, Masanori does not trust easily and seldom completely and it happens that his relationships outside of his clan are directly impacted by this. Holding to his facade, he isn't closed in appearance, but it tends to happen that he knows more about his 'friends' than they know about him, which is how he honestly prefers it. Sadness may be a fleeting thing, but he would prefer not to suffer it at all should he need to cut a thread and drop an empty husk, not that he's typically jumping to do so. What's his is his, after all, and he's quite possessive of what's his. Such decisions are ones he's more prepared to make than most, however, due to his ability to appeal to logic and his quiet, but staunch determination to do what he believes is necessary.

The problem lies in 'necessity' potentially being more brutal than what even some adult shinobi might be comfortable with.

Dangerous? Masanori is more than a little bit of that and it's amplified by the subtle, sadomasochistic undertones present about his personality. It happened at least once at the Academy that he put another child's arm out of their socket calmly and with a smile for some reason or another. He may not move quickly to solve an issue with violence, but it doesn't disturb him in the way it should a civilian or even the vague way it might your standard shinobi. That, and he's likely to take it a step further than necessary, twisting a blade as opposed to simply sticking it where it needs to be stuck. Call it another brilliant result of his upbringing. Spiders are carnivorous predators and, while he may not appear it at first glance, he's as brutal as any Shizuoka to have ever lived and, as his smile may well prove, just as insidious.

Suffice to say boy isn't as simple or potentially innocent as he seems and that's without touching upon the issues of his views regarding family, clan, and village. That's a story you'll just have to watch unfold.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
+ Webs and wire, figurative and literal. The boy's a great planner and multitasker who knows his string theory and application.
+ A+ acting ability.
+ Above average practical experience for his age in most shinobi arts.
+ Toxin resistant with a high threshold for pain.

+- Politician. I mean, he's got a pretty good politics game.
+- Trainwreck.

- Ostentatious in general interactions.
- Disrespectful.
- Taijutsu. See abilities.
- Manju cultist and Soba addict.
- Possessive.
- Family/clan issues out the wazoo.
- Have you seen his missive sample? Criminey.

Village Affiliation: Konohagakure no Sato
Rank: Genin

Prose sample: The door was closed quietly, but firmly for the expert movement of a single finger. It made no noise. Masanori had closed the door on specific cousins enough times to be so courteous as to leave them seething in their ever questionable, detestable thoughts and his thanks was always more of that same hatred and envy he had come to feed on over the years. Perhaps it was more a combination of his door closing expertise and finesse with words that suggested no concession whatsoever to emotional and mental demands in which he had intention of indulging for their politics?

In either case, he was accomplished.

As he started down the path out of the compound that sat on the very edge of the village, his smile remained upon his face even as he tucked his arms behind his head and turned his eyes to the sky. It had been his intention to skip today's lessons with the elders and that was exactly what he was going to do. Let them think he struggled to grasp technique they espoused as critical to the clan. He had already picked this batch up and worked it out on his own, but they didn't need to know that. He would rather they sweat over it and bemoan the fact that the heirship had fallen to such a useless person. It would make things easier down the road.

"Ne, Mi-chan," Masanori said, sliding a hand down so as to give the slightly weighted hood behind him a sudden tug. "Are you aw -- ah, you are!"

The appendage that found his hand touched his thumb once, twice and another found his pointer as the weight in the hood shifted. Dropping his other arm, he turned onyx-colored eyes over his shoulder to lock gazes with the spider peering back at him.

"I was thinking about napping, but you know what'd be more fun? Visiting Ami-chan and Itsuki-kun. Maybe oyassan-sensei, too. I told them I'd be tied up, after all."

Ha. Tied up. Purposefully, though. Miourugumo understood that too well and then some.

"It isn't that I'm fond of them," he added, retracting his hand as his summon sank quietly into the hood with a chitter. Turning his eyes ahead, they dropped to half-lidded, one corner of his mouth tugging upward just so. "They do make some rather amusing faces, though."
